Hidden Figures
Prior to the movie, a panel discussion was held with Monika Vasili of Atkins High School and Dr. Stephanie Dance Barnes of WSSU. Each of the panelist share their journey to their science careers. Ms. Vasili talked about how as a young girl she loved art and wanted to be an artist but since she was born in a communist county, it was decided for her that she would study physics. She developed a passion for science and teaching and inspiring her students to love science. Dr. Barnes said she was always curious how things worked. Both panelist discussed the challenge women face in science careers. There are more men in science careers than women and men are paid higher salaries than women. Each panelist explained how they try to inspire students to be passionate for science by being an example and encouraging them to be confident.
What I gained from the panel discussion and the movie is that the field of science can be challenging in many aspects but through persistence, courage, and confidence those challenges can be overcome.
